Automatic
Bollards with Remote Control
The main reason why there are automatic
bollards or automatic rising bollards is protection, security and control of
access. It is mainly on highways and
pedestrian zones so that access can be restricted there. If toll has to be collected or for some other
reason access to the highway needs to be restricted, the automatic bollard is
the answer. For pedestrian zones it is
used, so that vehicular traffic does not encroach on these areas.
Automatic bollards are also installed in
general car parking areas. Here it is not so much for security, but to ensure
that drivers pay for the parking. The
ticket issued after payment of parking fees enables the driver to open the
bollard automatically.
Other areas where it is necessary is at high
security access points and sensitive areas.
Such areas are airports, military bases, palaces, public buildings,
warehouses and train depots. These areas are generally cordoned off for normal
public and the automatic bollard is convenient, because it can be opened by
remote control if required. Military
bases normally have a check-point and the bollard is automatically opened once
the vehicle is thoroughly checked.
Most security professionals require today
mobile access control devices to protect and guard their facilities. Hence they need some device which is powerful
enough to stop a moving vehicle. The
products have to be of the highest quality.
They are installed by the company who manufacture them and they also
provide after-sales service.
The automatic bollard consists of an
automatic hydraulic bollard system.
Cantilever sliding gates or sliding track gates are installed. It is
possible to lower the whole bollard below ground to allow entry of a vehicle
with the help of pneumatic power units. If there is a security threat the
special emergency settings allow the posts to return automatically to an
upright position.
Automatic bollards can open and close more
than 100 times in a day. They work by
radio frequency, though some options
could be slower than others. They are generally used when the
entrance and exit is used very frequently.
If the automatic bollard is a part of a
larger access control system, the control device works well. However, there is often a combination of
methods used to operate such devices like radio, remote control, card readers,
keyswitch, numeric keypads or a push-button panel operated manually. Besides, most hydraulic units have back-up
provisions to support during power failure.
Automatic bollards were installed around the
U.S.
courthouse in lieu of a terrorist attack.
They were designed to stop a 7.5
ton truck traveling at 80 mph. Within
1.5 second thick steel plates would pop out of the ground automatically as soon
as there was an emergency.
Safety is of the highest priority and
concern and automatic bollards can be used against terrorism, because the whole
system can be operated with remote control and the bollard can be built in such
a way that it can stop up to 15-ton vehicles traveling at a speed of 44 mph. And the time to raise and lower the bollard
into the ground just takes a second!
